Christmas Express

ALL ABOARD!

Tonight is the BIG night. We're taking the WCQR Christmas Express to Speedway in Lights at Bristol Motor Speedway. We'll have around 40 WCQR listeners onboard who won tickets last week. The chartered bus provided by Green Coach Charter and Tours will be at the front of the line, so heavy traffic won't be an issue. We'll enjoy nearly two million Christmas lights and over two hundred Christmas lights displays while having some great fellowship. And it's an opportunity to meet and converse with our listeners. It's always great to hear their stories about how God has used this radio ministry to impact their lives.

Pumpkin Prayer

Pumpkin Carving Prayer

Dear God,

As I carve my pumpkin help me say this prayer:

Open my mind so I can learn about You;(Cut the top of the pumpkin)

Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do.(Clean out the inside)

Open my eyes so Your love I will see;(Cut the eyes out in heart shapes)

I'm so sorry for turning up my nose to all you've given me.(Cut a nose in the shape of a cross)

Open my ears so your word I will hear.(Cut the ears shaped like the Bible)

Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near(cut the mouth in the shape of a fish)

Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen.(Place a candle inside and light it)

In Jesus Name T Shirt

Here's the T Shirt that will be worn by Gate City High School students at tomorrow nights homecoming football game. Recently, a prayer was said by a student at a Gate City High School football game and a complaint was filed and the ACLU contacted the school about it. So, now the students at GCHS have taken matters into their own hands...and are taking a stand for Jesus Christ.
The shirts are available at First Baptist Church Gate City and are priced at $8. The church number is 276-386-3281.
Pictured in the photo with me is Associate Pastor John Deboard from First Baptist Gate City, and Austin Arwood, a senior at Gate City High School.

Prayer Request

Please pray for baby Holden David Hardin from Elizabethton. He was born 3 months premature Thursday night at the Johnson Medical Center. He weighs 1lb 8oz. and is 12 inches long. The doctors have given him a 40% chance of survival. However, they say if Baby Holden makes it to Monday his chance of survival increases to 80%. Earthquake in East TN

If you noticed your windows rattling last night, it was probably due to an earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 3.3 earthquake in East TN around 10pm. Some residents in Knoxville not only reported windows rattling but said their houses shook as well. Thank the Lord there's been no reports of injuries or serious damage.

Last Friday night, the Sullivan South football team was playing against Knoxville's West High School when number 54 Jake Logue collapsed and died. The students at West High held a prayer service the following day, and a rainbow appeared at the 5 yard line. Praise Report

I have a praise to share with you. Last week my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. On Friday, she had surgery and the malignant tissue was removed. They said they'd let us know what stage the cancer was in sometime this week. Yesterday, I received a call informing me of the Doctors report. The cancer was at the earliest stage and they believe they removed all of it. PTL!

The surgeon stressed the importance of women having regular checkups with their doctor to help detect breast cancer at an early stage. He said because my mom had done this, it may have saved her life. If it's been awhile since you've had a mammogram or visit to your doctor's office, I want to encourage you to get something scheduled as soon as you can. It could be the difference between life and death.

Breast cancer is very real. Here's some statistics. Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. For more information, visit http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/statistics/.

Prayer Request

This past Wednesday, I received a call from my wife and she told me she needed to talk to me about something when I got home. When she told me that I knew it must be something very serious. And I later found out that my intuition was correct. After a few minutes on the phone, I was able to convince Marsha to tell me. She wanted to wait because she knew the news would be difficult for me to hear. And it was...my Mom has breast cancer. Her Doctor confirmed the cancer last week and performed surgery on her this past Friday. Tomorrow we'll find out what stage the cancer is in, so if you would keep my Mom in your prayers I would be most grateful. Her name is Rita.

Blessings,
Mike Riddles

Free Food Delivered To Your Front Door

I was checking my email last week and noticed something that said free food. Naturally, that was of interest to me. So, I decided to check it out to see if it was legitimate...guess what? It is!

Schwan's food delivery company is running a national promotion and giving away $10 worth of free food to the first 500,00 new customers. From pizzas, to steaks, chicken, ice cream or whatever you want to order, as long as it's less than $10 it's free. And there's no obligation to order anything else. A Special Day!

This past Saturday was a special day for my 6 year old son, Michael. He caught his first fish. It was a 10 1/2 inch rainbow trout. He asked if we could take it home and keep it. I told him we didn't have anywhere to put it. He replied, "we could put it in the swimming pool." lol

As a Father, this was a very special day for me too. I will never forget it. I'm thankful the Lord has blessed me with such a wonderful memory with my son.

I Need Your Help

With the beautiful weather over the weekend, maybe you decided to spend some time outdoors with your family. Well, that's exactly what I did and we had a great time. However, while I was outside I made a big mistake. I went swimming with my kids and some friends and I forgot to put on sunscreen. And now, both of my arms are sunburned. I didn't realize I was getting burned until it was too late. So, I am open to any suggestions of products or remedies that will help alleviate the discomfort of a sunburn. Do you know anything that works? Your help is greatly appreciated!

What do you use when you or someone in your family gets sunburned?

Blessings,

Mike

Tips - Reduce Your Grocery Bill

If you've been to the grocery store lately, you've probably noticed prices have went up. Here's some tips that may save you money on your next visit.

-Choose store brand over name brand.

-You think bigger is better? Not always TRUE. About 25 percent of the time, smaller is actually a better deal! The only way you’ll know is to check unit price labels.

-Other ways to save:USE newspaper or online coupons, Make a list, and stick to it.Always use your store bonus card if your store has one.

As for the store’s weekly flyer, Consumer Reports says be aware that not everything you see in a flyer is actually on sale.

Kari Schoondyke - She's In Heaven

I had received news earlier this week that she was improving. Then this past Tuesday, I was informed she had passed away in her Mom's arms. Kari was 7 months old and had serious heart problems. Yesterday, her Dad wrote this letter.

Hello: Jennifer, jeffery, Katie, my brother Steve and I have just returned from the hospital. Unfortunately, Kari has not returned with us. She passed away today at 12:46 pm in the arms of her mother. We were all with her and had a chance to hold her, talk to her, and kiss her sweet little soft head. We decided to let her go and let God decide. She had fought so hard and for so long we felt as though we owed this to her. Although we will miss her each and everyday and think of her constantly, we will never forget what she has meant to so many. Her short life touched the hearts of literally thousands of people both here and around the country. We spoke of everyone often and told her how many people were fighting for her through prayer. Now, she is truly an angel-no suprise, right?. From this point forward we feel Kari will watch over us, smile repeatedly, and comfort us in our incomprehensible sadness and complete despair. We take comfort that she is finally no longer stuggling and is with the Lord. I am sure He has welcomed her with open arms and taken away her struggles, pain, and told her how much she was loved. I held her before her mother, told her how much I loved her, stroked her head and read Matthew 19:13-14."......Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." I told her were were not abandoning her but we we were no longer going to hinder her journey to the Lord by keeping her here because we would miss her so deeply. She did not hurt or struggle- she appeared peaceful. Her quiet passing told us that she was ready and that she had been waitingfor us to let her go. If she would have passed suddenly at another time we would have missed the opportunity to adequately say goodbye. We spent time with her and said what we needed to say- once again, God and Kari were waiting patiently for us. It was a true blessing and gift that our entire family will cherish until we meet her again. We want to say thank you to everyone for their constant support and prayers throughout this whole time. It made such a difference in each of our lives, I cannot put this into> words- mostly Kari's. Jennifer, the kids, amd I will probably start home tomorrow sometime. we will take the trip slow and not rush. Her funeral service will be this Sunday (visitation 2-5pm, funeral services immediately following) at Tri Cities Baptist Church in Gray from 2-5pm - so fitting, Easter Sunday! God Bless and thank you to everyone. We are forever in your debt. Sincerely, Jeff

Thank The Lord For Firefighters

Last night, my wife and I were watching the news and they were covering a fire in Erwin. Oh my goodness....did you see it? The fire was huge! And it destroyed the Old Town Hall in downtown Erwin. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. A big thank you to the firefighters for helping contain the fire and preventing it from doing more damage.

Kari Update - Prayer Works!

I couldn't wait to share this with you. Here's the latest update from Kari's Dad.

Hello: It is 1:16 pm and we just spoke with Kari's surgeon. He repositioned the left main coronary artery and her heart function returned completely to normal. Her blood pressure immeidately out of the OR is 100-110mmHg systolic (compare that to 50-60mmHg the last time. She is heading to the ICU now and is even off the ECMO (bypass machine)! She still has her chest open as a precaution, but is doing better. Removal of the ECMO is a large step forward- this can be associated with significant bleeding and this is part of the reason her chest was left open just in case she starts to bleed. This will allow easier access to remove any blood collections in the chest that may occur. Dr. Spray plans to close the chest tomorrow if she does not have another arrest. For now, we wait and thank God for his mercy. It appears she has been allowed some rest, that is, before she begins her next climb. I think God has given us a miracle for all of us to see! Prayer matters, prayer works, and prayer is powerful. Please keep praying for Kari- God appears to be listening. Please continue to help us get Kari Home. She is definately doing her part.

Cautiously optimistic and thanking God,
Jeff

Please Pray For Kari

Yesterday afternoon, I received a phone call from a lady who said she had an urgent prayer request. She also emailed me a copy of the prayer request to share with you. Please read below. I ask that you lift this little 7 month old girl and her family up in prayer.

(Pic - Kari with her brother and sister)

Hey Everyone,
Kari's surgery was delayed this morning. We had hoped they could use our blood for her surgery, but a mixup with the Red Cross didn't make this possible for another day or so (they "spun" the blood at the Red Cross, but the hospital needed "whole blood"). We opted to go forward with the surgery instead of waiting for the blood issue to be resolved, so she went in around 1:15. The surgery lasted over 3 hours.
When Dr. Spray was done he was satisfied with the outcome. He closed the sternum, but quickly opened it back up because Kari's heart began to swell. Her heart will remain open tonight and they will try to close it in the morning. The cardiologist (haven't talked to the surgeon yet) says this is not too unusual and is hopeful that all will go well in the morning. Of course Jeff and I are very scared. Please continue to pray for her.
Will update you as I know more.
Jennifer

Pregnant Women and Lipstick

If you're a Mom-to-Be, you may wanna avoid using lipstick. That's because the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics issued a report that found lead in half of the top 33 brands they tested. However, if you'd like to use lipstick while pregnant, you should do some research on the brand you use to make sure it doesn't contain lead.

Among the top brands testing positive for lead were:

L'Oreal Colour Riche - True Red and Classic Wine

Cover Girl Incredifull Lip Color - Maximum Red

Dior's Addict - Postive Red

Food City 500 Cans

Picture - WCQR Jr. Listener wants to take the BMS Pace Car for a spin

This week we've been visiting various Food City stores to collect food for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast TN. Our goal is 500 non perishable food items and if we meet the goal Food City will match it. Well, I guess we better set a new goal, because due to your outpouring support we exceeded 500 yesterday. And we still have two days to go. How cool is that? So, now we'd love to reach 1500...and with your help we can do it. Don't forget...everyone who brings food receives a pair of tickets to Ford Fan Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Here's the schedule:
Today - 3-6pm at the Food City in Piney Flats

What's in the CAN?

This past Friday, we took an item and placed it into a can and asked you to identify it. The first person who could tell us what was in the can would win a family four pack of movie tickets plus the new Veggietales DVD. After a ton of guesses we decided to give you a hint...it was a vegetable. We had some interesting guesses, it's a pickle, a carrot, a potato but still no winner. So, we decided to give another hint. It starts with an R and ends with an H...some people say it's Rad. Minutes later we got a winner. The item in the can was a RADISH.

Is Pink In For Men In 2009

Thursday morning my wife Marsha ironed me a pink shirt to wear to work. While at lunch I noticed several people looking at me funny...when I got back to WCQR, Brian Sumner started kidding me about wearing a pink shirt. Later that day, my cousin Mitchell Bouton and a friend named Tony Lopez came by to visit me at the station. Mitchell asked "Hey Mike, what's up with the pink shirt"? However, his friend Tony said there wasn't anything wrong with a guy wearing a pink shirt. So, since the ol' pink shirt generated so much conversation, I decided to do a poll on my show today. And we had a huge amount of calls. The results of the poll are posted below.

Question

Is it okay for a guy to wear a pink shirt?

98% said Yes

2% said No

Scott Teague, a former Marine from Mountain City, TN is walking 440 miles to speak with congress about a bill that would allow courthouses and schools the right to display the Ten Commandments. Scott began his journey Sunday morning and plans to arrive in Washington D.C. on March 2. He was called by God about six weeks ago to make the walk to our nation's capitol, Scott said "when God calls you've got to answer the call". Yesterday, I spoke with him and he was almost in Wytheville, VA. If you'd like to keep up with Scott's awareness walk for the Ten Commandments visit his website http://www.tencommandmentswalk.com/home.html

POLL

Earlier I received an email from a friend that said NBC was conducting an important poll on their website. This is an opportunity to let everyone know where we stand on our faith in God as a nation. The question asks if you think "In God We Trust" should remain on American currency. I thought you might like to voice your opinion on this important question, so I've placed a link on my blog. To place your vote click here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10103521/

Please feel free to share this with your friends and loved ones.
